What Causes Sewer Smells in Your Home?

Sewer odors inside your home are unpleasant and often indicate a problem with your plumbing system. Identifying the source is key to resolving the issue.

One of the most common causes is a dry P-trap. The P-trap is designed to hold water and block sewer gases from entering your home. If a drain hasn’t been used for a while, the water can evaporate, allowing odors to pass through.

Another cause can be a buildup of debris inside pipes. Organic matter can create foul smells as it breaks down.

Leaks in drain pipes or loose connections can also allow sewer gases to escape into your home. In more serious cases, the issue may be related to a problem with the sewer line or venting system.

To fix minor issues, try running water in unused drains to refill the P-trap. Cleaning drains can also help remove buildup.

If the smell persists, it’s important to have your system inspected. Sewer odors can indicate larger issues that require professional attention.
